BMW Will Produce the M4 GT4 Racer for 2018

January 20, 2018

BMW has been the choice of privateer racing teams for a long time. And 2017 will be the BMW M4 GT4’s last racing season. With a good number of M3 GT4s competing in various racing cups, BMW is already working on its successor: the BMW M4 GT4 race car.

What do we expect from the spiritual successor of the M3 GT4?

First, it will be a standard M4 coupe converted to a track car. It means that the M4 GT4 will have the 3.0-litre twin turbo straight six petrol engine of its road-going version. The engine should have relatively the same power which is around 425bhp and 410 lb-ft. It would also get all the electronic bits from the standard M4. Everything here does not scream race car… yet.

Where it gets interesting is what the M4 GT4 race car inherits from its M-series brothers. It will inherit the carbon fibre bonnet of the M4 GTS. Its seats, brakes and pedals will be from its big brother, the M6 GT3. Then it gets a set of carbon fibre doors to save weight. The M4 GT4 will also get racing spec aerodynamic package with a set of carbon fibre front splitter and rear wing. The exhaust system will also be upgraded to racing spec.

The GT4 European Series is an amateur racing car championship that aims to give teams and drivers a taste of the GT Championship race. The rules are similar to the GT3 series and the lowest powered cars of the GT classes. Drivers in the GT4 Championship are true amateurs with strict rules on who are qualified to drive GT4 cars.

The BMW M4 GT4 as of the moment is just a computer rendering so we will have to wait for a while before we get even a hint of its performance figures. From the look of the initial computer rendering, it does look like a capable and really fast track car. To have an idea of how much the BMW M4 GT4 race car would cost, it should be a little bit more expensive than the BMW M4 GTS which is currently priced at £120,770. Better save up for this one if you are interested.
